John Brawley grew up in Westport, CT and has been through the University of Vermont, Boston University, and ultimately received a Ph.D. in Marine Systems Ecology at the University of Maryland. He moved to Duxbury, MA to work on marine science projects through a consulting firm, but soon directed his interests specifically toward shellfish aquaculture and has since been one of several growers that produce for Island Creek Oysters.
John has over 20 years of experience working in environmental and aquatic sciences. His research has focused on systems ecology and modeling of shallow, coastal marine ecosystems such as estuaries, bays, and lagoons. Recently he has joined a team of scientists who established a shellfish hatchery in Zanzibar, Tanzania and has been working with local villages there to optimize beneficial shellfish aquaculture practices. He co-founded Saquish Scientific, a marine science consulting practice.
